Materials Usage Policy

The lawful purchase and use of copyrighted musical works is essential to ensuring that composers are able to earn a livelihood from their creative labor, support their families, and continue producing original artistic work. Compliance with copyright and licensing requirements preserves the integrity of the creative marketplace and upholds the legal and ethical obligations that protect intellectual property.

All sheet music and related materials (“Materials”) distributed by Parker Fritz and/or Field Notes Press are protected by copyright law. Purchase or download of the Materials grants a limited license for use under the terms outlined below. Ownership of the copyright remains with the composer and publisher at all times.

Permitted Usage

Upon lawful purchase, the purchaser is granted a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to:

  • Use the Materials for personal practice, rehearsal, and performance.

  • Perform the Materials in live concerts, recitals, workshops, classrooms, and educational settings, provided no additional physical copies are made and digital materials are not shared.

  • Use the Materials for archival and reference purposes within the purchaser’s own library.

  • Annotate the Materials for personal or ensemble use.

  • Print and/or share a reasonable number of copies only for the purchasing individual or ensemble, consistent with the number of performers involved.

Prohibited Usage

The following uses are strictly prohibited without prior written permission from the publisher:

  • Reproduction or duplication beyond the scope of the original purchase.

  • Distribution, sharing, lending, or resale of physical or digital copies, including via email, cloud storage, or file-sharing platforms.

  • Posting or uploading the Materials (in whole or in part) to public or private websites, learning management systems, or social media platforms.

  • Altering, arranging, adapting, or excerpting the Materials for redistribution or performance as a derivative work.

  • Commercial use, including recording, synchronization, broadcast, or monetized online content, unless a separate license is obtained.

  • Removal, alteration, or obscuring of copyright notices, watermarks, or purchaser identification.

Educational and Ensemble Use

Educational institutions and ensembles must ensure that each performer or ensemble has a sufficient number of legally obtained copies. Photocopying or digital duplication as a substitute for purchase is not permitted, except where explicitly allowed by law. Collaborators of the original purchaser are prohibited from sharing or distributing Materials.

Recordings and Media Use

Audio or video recordings of performances using the Materials, whether live or studio, require separate permissions unless explicitly stated otherwise. This includes streaming platforms, social media, and commercial releases. Contact Parker Fritz and Field Notes Press to request an audio or video sharing license agreement.

Digital Security

Any personalized, watermarked, or purchaser-identified copies are intended solely for the original purchaser. The purchaser is responsible for preventing unauthorized access or distribution.

Enforcement

Unauthorized use of the Materials constitutes copyright infringement and may result in legal action, revocation of licensing privileges, or claims for damages.
