Ramp Up was written as the opening work for the 2025 Great Plains Saxophone Workshop Large Ensemble Concert. It aims to excite both performers and audience members by showcasing the wide range of colors and intensities possible with the saxophone ensemble. At the heart of the piece is a light, sea-shanty inspired melody that appears in several forms throughout the work. This melody takes on different characters, at times quiet and relaxed, and at others driving the full energy of the ensemble. The piece “ramps up” the energy several times, continually building excitement before a final, celebratory statement of the theme.
